Lack of awareness

(Bridget) #21

It’s been a major frustration for me for most of my life, so I’m sorry to not be more help, but one thing that my doctor has told me to say to ignorant people is this:

“Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, like lupus. Have you heard of lupus?”

Plenty of people will then say yes, but will tell you that they don’t understand much about lupus. They then might realize that while they think they know all there is to know about so-called “diabetes” while they instruct you to “just take insulin” for your low blood sugar…well, if it’s like lupus, type 1 must be more complicated than meets the eye after all.

I hope that made a little bit of sense. I know it’s not easy, but just the awareness that there are thousands if not millions of people facing the same struggles helps me to cope. I hope it will do the same for you.

I have gained so much from reading all of your responses. It is invaluable to hear about your experiences and the ways you have responded, adapted and advocated. Thank you all so much, for this forum has eased a difficult transition!
