Sex

(Kateski) #1

So this morning my husband gets back in bed all fresh out of the shower with his face shaved and his hair combed and clearly trying to seduce me... I'm game but I feel like I might be a little low... So I test and of course I am low.  So I have to go grab a juice box, my preferred method of sugar correction.  I sit on the couch drinking it, waiting to feel normal.  By this time my husband is getting on with his day, checking email and getting dressed for work.... Needless to say, we never did it! This is not the first time things have happened this way.  How frustrating!  Does anyone else have similar stories and what do you do to make sure this doesn't happen often????  I don't have a pump... But do people have sex with their pumps on?

"^___^" yaaa haha

I asked my boyfriend how to respond to this, and I quote "Well baby you need to incorporate that juice box into your lovemaking." (said in a voice that sounded like a combination of Berry White and Shaft) Knowing him, he would run off for the whiped cream, fruit, and peanut butter too. He is a goof ball but he would have me check my blood sugar in ten minutes too. If he wants to have sex and I am low I tell him that he needs to be in charge and that for the 1st few minutes can't be too heavy. I also tend to be a bit more of the center of attention if I am low =) which is pretty nice.

Sex with the pump is easy, I take it off sometimes if I'm a little low and if I'm higher I just keep it on and we both act responsible for moving it if it is in the way.

Kate:

Although I think I am probably a lot older than you are, I can certainly relate to your problems!  My husband and I have been married ten years; it is not either of our's first marriage.  When we were first dating, the first time Ken ever experienced a bad low for me was right AFTER we had sex for the very first time. I can laugh now, he ended up running naked down the hallway to the kitchen to get me juice, but at the time it was horribly embarrassing, and he was terrified... it is a testament to how much he loves me that he didn't break it off right there and then!  So, unless my sugars are high, (in which case I don't feel like having sex anyways) I ALWAYS  eat a snack or have juice BEFORE sex, period the end. And, in light of what happened the first time, Ken is all good with that.  Even if it runs me high later, it is worth it, and I can always do a correction bolus later if I need to. I do wear an insulin pump, but not during sex.  I usually get sleepy, so most of the time, Ken hooks me back up or makes sure I do it before I drift off to sleep.  Yes,  many many times we have either had to put it off or missed our chance entirely because of a low, BUT.. when we got married we both brought children into our combined households, so with 6 kids running around, it wasn't the only reason, and now, as we have gotten older, he is on medication that  doesn't help his libico or performance either.  YES IT IS FRUSTRATING!  But that being said, it isn't the end of the world either.  Maybe mornings are just not a good time for you.  I DO know that we have had many very frank and honest talks about this, something that would have never have happened with my X, and we just try and work it out.  I know how much he loves me and how much I love him and how important sex is to both of us, even at out age (I am 50 and he is 55). sometimes we just get out of synch with each other, and it takes a conscience effort on both our parts to get back to the same place. You didn't say if your husband was upset or angry, or if it you that is feeeling upset.

My husband is/was definitely NOT upset or angry.   We actually have a pretty good sex life, I guess that I am just annoyed by even having to think about my blood sugar when we are trying to keep things spontaneous. We are going on 7 years of marriage and 11 years of being together and there really isn't anything we can't talk about.  I guess I should just keep juice boxes bed side...

For some reason, while I was on the pump, I'd always go very low during / after. Luckily, back on MDI, it's less of a problem. I usually just have a juice box nearby for afterwards...

So I can respond to the pump question.  It depends.  Sometimes we do with the pump on and sometimes off.  Either way my husband is always very careful not to hit my site.  I mean if you get too caught up in what you are doing you can definitely pull your site out and it hurts.  Also, if you take your pump off, put the cap on.  I have gotten threads from the blanket wrapped around my site before and it HURTS!  As far as the lows, I am always low afterwards but I don't mind.  What could beat sex and Orange Juice?!

Hi Kate,

So, if you say this happens often, you should try to figure out why your lows are happening.  is it always in the morning?  check with your doctor about how to change your insulin for that time.  also, if your husband is often game to have sex in the morning after his shower, perhaps you could get up while he's showering, test, and then try to start the juice before he's done.  that way you're already on your way to feeling better when he gets out.  if  he starts things up with you, let him know you were a little low and to start slow for you.  I've been on the pump for 11 years.  I usually keep it on, but when I take it off, put the plug in because it can scratch your partner.  I'm not married, but my current boyfriend is fine with it.   Only one told me it was a little awkward for him at first, but he got over it.  I hope this helps.

Been there.  Done that.  HOW FRUSTRATING!!  Even had a low in the middle of sex once.  Talk about a mood killer.  Shoving my guy off me and saying things I wouldn't normally say.  By the time I corrected, he was WAY out of the mood.  Mad at me because of the things I had said.  Good thing I found someone who understands what it's like.  (My boyfriend now is T2)

Or whipped cream and chocolate syrup!! LOL!

i so do not think its a big deal i mean a lot of embarrasing things can happen during it.. I have had to stop while having it once i stopped and took my blood i was at 29! I freaked out! i have had to have juice before etc... if anyone ever got mad or held it against you then maybe someone else would be better with you. You seem like you have a great relationship.. if u didnt get a chance to do it that morn u can always make it up later!

Yeah, so my husband is a type 1, too.  We're both on pumps.  Neither of us removes our pump, but we aren't exactly crazy either.  The worst thing that has ever happened is that we grab the wrong pump getting out of bed.  However, in 8 years together, this has only happened a few times.  Lows during sex suck for me because it is generally unrewarding.

Hello, could you catch a cold, or was you nervous lately? There can be a psychological problem, and a physiological one. I recommend to go to the doctor, but I can not recommend pills, since I did not take it myself.

I absolutely have Sex with my pump on, depending where you put it, it doesn’t get in the way. I have an Omni Pod, just love it, so much I bought stock in the company. One thing I do, not just because of the sex but I test my BS approx. every 2-3 hours. I have no symptomology of Hi’s and Lows so I need to do this after 64 years my body isn’t acting normal. You might want to test your BS just before you thing the fun begins or another thing that I love is the Dexcom CGM, I have stock in this company also. it will warn you when changes out of the norm are occurring and you can take measures before it gets to bad. I’ve been married for 50 years this Dec. and my husband doesn’t have a problem with my pump or CGM. Knowing you are secure in your BS is a great freedom when you want to be intimate, or any time. Sex is important and I try not to let things interfere if I can handle the problem before it becomes a problem. PS: tell your husband to be patient, maybe the longer he waits the better it could be. Keep Glucose tablets or such next to the bed and if you are in doubt and can’t test your BS take the glucose and enjoy working off the extra glucose if you really didn’t need it. It is better to work it off than to panic because you are too low. Enjoy your sex life and be glad your husband showered and shaved that’s a plus. Have a great day Enjoy!!! bye jan
