Swine Flu & Diabetics!

(Hilaryf) #1

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to give you all a heads up!

I tested positive for swine flu on Thursday!

Now in case anyone did not know diabetics are in the high risk group so if you are feeling sick even with just cold like symptoms get tested! I only had a sore throat and a burning cough and when I went to lookup the symptoms of swine flu those were only 2 on the list of like 15, So I did not think I had swine flu but I went to the doctor anyway, even my doctor did not think I had swine flu, she tested me for strep throat and it came back negative but when she found out I was a diabetic she decided to do a swine flu test just to be sure, and she came into my room and said she was surprised that my test came back positive! So normally people without immune system issues, like diabetes don’t get any medicine they are told to just go home and sleep it off, but since I have diabetes she prescribed me Tamiflu! Anyway the whole point of this Post is to warn you, don’t think you have to have serious symptoms to have swine flu, I didn't and I ended up testing positive! If you feel at all sick get tested and be on the safe side because swine flu will take a harder toll on you if you are a diabetic and you are not getting medicine! I hope this helped!

Peace and I hope no one else gets the H1N1 virus!

I'm glad I could help!

Yes definatly get tested!

Like I said I did not think I had it either, I thought I had a cold but I did have it, after a day I started to get really sick the first few days you don't feel so bad and then BAM! it hits you! so yes get  tested so if you do have it you can start the meds right away (:

But I hope you don't have it, because its HORRIBLE! :(

Thanks Hilary, Are you going through all the flu symptoms like fever etc. ? Will Tamiflu help with all that...I hope you feel better soon and thanks for looking out for others !

hmm.... a week ago i was feeling a bit sick and swine flu is going around up here..... luckily, its likely i already had it once in the summer so i may have built up some resistance.

hope you get better soon!

Meme,

I am going through most of the symptoms but I have not had a fever, it maybe because I started Tamiflu before I started to get really sick! But yes the Tamiflu will help with that, it turns out it is in short supply thats why only people in the high risk groups are being prescribed it. thank you I am starting to feel a lot better (:

I think that's what was reported in the media early on (about Tamiflu being held out for those in high risk groups), but I know sooooo many people who have gotten Tamiflu regardless of age or underlying conditions.

It is horrible! I am on my last day of Tamiflu today, and this whole week I have never felt worse in my life. The docs wanted me to go to the hospital but of course I refused because every time I go to the hospital they mess up my blood sugars and it takes me forever to get them back under control. When I went in on Monday my fever was almost 104, I was really really sick. Now I feel a little weak still and of course tired. My husband got it too, but both of my kids stayed clear of it!! I'm so happy I will never have to deal with this again. My sugars were not too terrible, consistently around 140 for the week, considering I wasn't eating hardly anything, but most importantly I was drinking lots of fluids. Now I've lost almost 10 pounds, but the docs said that its ok since I wasn't really trying to eat.

I hoping to go back to work on Monday, and never have this crazy swine flu again!

If you have access to the shot, I would definitely get it to prevent this horrid flu!

Thanks for the timely reminder. Calling my doctor’s office to see if they have the H1N! vaccine for me and my son.

I had a huge argument with my dad this weekend about H1N1 and having type one diabetes. He was all for me getting a flu shot, especially in his line of work he sees various reports and was like "You are in a High Risk Category! You need a shot." I told my Dad that I would deal with the bug when it comes. Other than a beat up Endocrine System my body holds up quite well to illnesses and such. So I would prefer to take my chances. My one Grandmother and I had the same argument. She is has we think type 1.5 diabetes. She really does not fit the bill for those who have type 2, however she was diagnosed in her 60's. She was quite insistent on me getting a shot as well, since she had one. I was told she did not want me to get sick or die. I told her, that I would be fine and she just didn't want me to get sick and die, 'cause she wanted to have a priest in the family. It was a happy argument but still a pain. In the end though, I feel that the best way to handle Swine Flu is to be proactive and wash hands, don't take risks, and avoid others who are sick.

Well, I wish I had the oppertunity to get the shot, its not available in my state yet!

I do wash me hands all the time but as a college kid im surrounded by people all the time all I have to do is walk by one to get sick.

I hope your plan works out for you.

Hilary.

I had swine flu. It wasn't that bad, except for the fever for 3 days. Just watch sugars and it's fine.
